Custom Commissions

Custom commissions are the heart of what we do. We take your meaningful images — a child's drawing, a tattoo you designed, a family photograph — and turn them into bespoke pieces of classical marquetry art, built to last for generations.

The Commission Process

SEND US YOUR IMAGE

Upload the image you want translated — your child's drawing, a tattoo, a family photograph, a sigil, anything with a story. At checkout, choose your orientation, attach a PNG or JPEG, and leave a note with anything we need to know.

DIGITIZATION

We rebuild your image in Adobe Illustrator, redrawing it by hand into the clean vector linework our laser can read. Every edge is refined and every shape simplified — the goal is to preserve the character of what you sent while translating it into a form the machine can cut.

MARQUETRY DESIGN

This is where the piece becomes marquetry. We map your linework across our library of hardwoods — cherry, walnut, sapele, maple, aromatic cedar, and Baltic birch — making choices about tone, grain, depth, and contrast. We email you the mockup and finalized linework. You get two rounds of revisions.

CUTTING & FINISHING

Once approved, we begin cutting. Each piece is laser-cut from a hand-selected board, matched to the grain and character of the design. The pieces are inlaid by hand onto a solid wood substrate and finished with Odie's Oil — a non-toxic hardwax finish that deepens the grain and lasts for generations.

Frequently asked questions

What if I don't like the wood mockup? Can I return it?

We provide two rounds of revisions on the mockup — that's plenty of room to adjust wood species, tone, or design details. We'll work with you until you're happy. If after two rounds we still can't land on something you love, we'll refund your order minus a small design fee.

We cannot accept returns on finished custom canvases once they are cut and delivered. All custom canvas sales are final.

If the finished piece doesn't match the approved design

For custom commissions, we send you a wood-inlay mockup for review before cutting begins. If the finished piece doesn't match the design you approved, contact helloflowerfang@gmail.com within 14 days of delivery with photos and we'll remake the piece or issue a refund, at our discretion.

How long does a custom commission take from start to finish?

Plan for 30 days from order to shipment. The first 10–15 days are the design phase (digitization → wood mockup → your approval), and the remaining 10–15 days are production. If your piece is time-sensitive (birthday, anniversary, memorial), let us know at checkout, and we'll do our best to accommodate.

What happens right after I place my order?

You'll receive an order confirmation, and then within 24 hours we'll email you a link to submit your reference image via a short Google Form. Please plan to send us your image within 3 days so we can stay on schedule.

Can you rush a commission?

Sometimes — depends on our current queue. Email us before ordering (helloflowerfang@gmail.com) with your target date, and we'll tell you honestly whether we can hit it. Rush fees may apply for expedited work.

My image is a phone photo or low-resolution — is that okay?

We can work with almost any image, but higher resolution gives us more to work with. Aim for at least 1500 pixels on the longest side. If your image is a phone photo of a physical drawing, take it in good natural light with the drawing flat on a plain surface. If you're worried, email us before ordering and we'll take a look.

What kind of images work best for marquetry?

Images with strong silhouettes and clear shapes translate best. Line drawings, tattoo designs, high-contrast photos, logos, and simple illustrations all work beautifully. Very fine details (tiny text, gradient shading, wispy pencil marks) will be simplified during digitization to work within the medium.

Can I commission an image I found online, or one that features a celebrity or licensed character?

We can only recreate images you have the legal right to reproduce. That means original art you made, photographs you took, family photos, images you commissioned or purchased, and public-domain images. We can't reproduce copyrighted works (Studio Ghibli, Disney, Marvel, band logos, etc.) or images of celebrities or public figures without permission. If you're unsure about a specific image, ask us before ordering.

Can I pick which wood species you use?

Absolutely. When we send you the mockup for approval, you can request specific woods from our library: cherry, walnut, sapele, maple, aromatic cedar, and Baltic birch. If you have a strong preference before we design, tell us in the notes when you submit your reference image.

Will the wood grain look exactly like the mockup?

The mockup shows the wood species and general tonal placement, but each actual board of wood has unique grain patterns that we hand-select for your piece. This means the finished piece will resemble the mockup but with the natural character of the wood we choose — richer, more textured, and one-of-a-kind. This variation is a feature of the craft, not a flaw.

Do you offer larger sizes than 24" × 30"?

Yes — our commission designs scale up cleanly. For stairwells, foyers, above-bed installations, or gallery walls, email us (helloflowerfang@gmail.com) with your dream dimensions, and we'll quote it directly. Larger pieces have longer lead times.

How much does shipping cost?

We offer free nation-wide shipping on every order.

International orders are quoted case-by-case; email helloflowerfang@gmail.com before ordering if you're outside the U.S.
