Tessellation Lizard Diptych

Two panels of interlocking lizards, hand-cut from three tonally distinct hardwoods. No gaps, no overlap — every shape's edge is another shape's edge, all the way to the border. The medium is 17th-century marquetry; the pattern owes its lineage to M.C. Escher, who spent decades proving that mathematical repetition could be a form of poetry.

The design plays a quiet trick on the eye. Focus on one wood tone and you see one set of lizards; shift focus and a completely different set emerges from the space between them. There is no negative space — it's lizards, all the way down.

Wood palette. Built from three species: maple (the cream field), black-stained birch (the black), and aromatic cedar (the pink-red heartwood streaks). Each is chosen for tone, grain, and how it reads at eye level. Together, they turn the pattern into something both graphic and warm — modern art with the depth of real wood behind it.

Dimensions.

  • 5" × 7" panels — overall 10" × 7" when hung as a pair
  • 8" × 10" panels — overall 16" × 10" when hung as a pair
  • 12" × 16" panels — overall 24" × 16" when hung as a pair
  • 24" × 30" panels — overall 48" × 30" when hung as a pair

Sold as a diptych. When the two panels are hung side-by-side, the tessellation extends across both — one continuous pattern doubling the visual field. Each panel can also stand alone, since the pattern completes within its own borders.

Why the price. Tessellations are the densest, most labor-intensive marquetry we make. Every individual lizard is cut separately, fitted by hand, and inlaid with the same precision as a much larger piece — but at this pattern density, a single diptych can involve many individually placed shapes. The pricing reflects that craft.

Split-Shipping — Ship as a matched pair to two homes (optional at checkout)

Because each panel is a complete pattern that stands beautifully on its own, we offer split shipping on this diptych. Choose the split-shipping option at checkout, tell us who's receiving the second panel and whether you'd like them to have the primary or inverted panel, and we'll ship one panel to you and one to them. One design, split between two homes — a friend, a partner, a sibling, a long-distance loved one.

Materials. Hand-selected hardwood veneers on a solid wood substrate, sourced from an FSC-certified supplier committed to responsibly managed forests. Precisely laser-cut and inlaid by hand. Finished with Odie's Oil, a non-toxic hardwax that deepens the grain and lasts for generations.

Free U.S. shipping included.

Made to order in the Flower & Fang studio in Seattle by Jack Danger. Please allow up to 30 days from order to shipment. Shipped directly to you or sent as a gift on your behalf — leave a note at checkout with any special instructions.

Add a custom engraving. Have a message inscribed on the back — a name, a date, a dedication, anything the piece should carry with it. Choose your length at checkout.

Care. Wipe clean with a soft dry cloth. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight and high humidity. A light re-oil every year or two with any food-safe wood conditioner will keep the grain lively.
