Custom Commission — Wood Marquetry Canvas

A one-of-a-kind hardwood marquetry canvas made from an image that matters to you. Send us a drawing, a tattoo design, a family photograph, a sigil, a logo, a beloved pet — anything with a story — and we translate it into a layered hardwood-and-acrylic piece built to hang, hand down, and live with for generations.

How it works

  1. Send us your image during checkout. Upload your reference image in any format during before you add to cart. Choose your orientation at check out (vertical or horizontal), and leave a note with anything we need to know right away.
  2. We digitize your image by hand in Adobe Illustrator, redrawing it into the clean vector linework our laser can read.
  3. We design the marquetry. We map your linework across our library of six hardwoods — cherry, walnut, sapele, maple, aromatic cedar, and Baltic birch — making choices about tone, grain, depth, and contrast. We email you a mockup and finalized linework for your approval. You get two rounds of revisions on the wood choices or the design.*
  4. We cut and finish. Each piece is laser-cut from a hand-selected board, inlaid by hand onto a solid wood substrate, and finished with Odie's Oil — a non-toxic hardwax that deepens the grain and lasts for generations.

*To keep your commission on schedule, please respond to your mockup emails with revisions or approval within 3 business days. Projects that lapse into silence for more than 10 business days will incur a restart fee of $50 to bring your project back into production.

What happens next:

  • We'll acknowledge receipt of your image within 2 business days
  • Your first mockup arrives within 5–7 business days
  • You get two rounds of revisions on the design/wood choice (please respond within 3 business days to avoid a restart fee)
  • Once approved, production takes 10-15 days
  • Total timeline: 30 days from order to shipment

If we don't hear from you within 3 business days of our mockup email, we'll email you a reminder using the address you checked out with.

Sizing:

  • 5" x 7" – Perfect for desks, shelves, or bedside tables. This is our giftable size: substantial enough to feel like a keepsake, small enough to hand-carry to whoever it's meant for.
  • 8" x 10" – Ideal for bedside tables or grouped wall layouts.
  • 12" x 16" – A versatile mid-sized focal piece for offices or living rooms.

What the price includes. Every custom commission includes a design consultation, custom digitization of your image, a wood-inlay mockup for your approval, and two rounds of revisions — plus the finished handmade canvas itself. This is why a custom piece is more than one of our ready-made designs at the same size: you're paying for the design labor, the personalization, and a piece made just for you.

Materials. Six tonally different hardwoods on a solid wood substrate, finished with Odie's Oil.

Made to order. Because each commission involves a design phase (digitization → mockup → your approval) plus production, please allow 30 days total from order to shipment. If you have a hard deadline — a birthday, anniversary, holiday, or memorial — let us know at checkout and we'll do our best to accommodate.

Care. Wipe clean with a soft dry cloth. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight and high humidity. A light re-oil every year or two with any food-safe wood conditioner will keep the grain lively.

What to keep in mind for a good reference image

  • High resolution helps. Aim for 1500 pixels or larger on the longest side if you can.
  • Strong silhouettes translate best. Marquetry loves clear shapes and defined edges. Very fine details (thin lines, tiny text, gradient shading) get simplified during digitization.
  • Photos, drawings, tattoos, logos, family iconography — all work well. If you're not sure whether your image will translate, email us before ordering.
